The artwork uses a population estimate as its denominator. It is a reference for the scale of the picture, not a live estimate of people currently on Earth.
An annual reference, not a live counter
The application fetches the latest available World Bank observation for World / SP.POP.TOTL. The observation is annual, is cached for operational stability, and is labeled with its year in the interface.

VIEW THE SOURCE DATAIf the source is temporarily unavailable, the service uses a configured fallback reference and labels it clearly. Historical deletions keep their epoch so a future annual estimate can be adopted without rewriting the artwork's history.
